To hide until Bob their father came home and they would tell him that Martha could not come home for Christmas
The youngest Cratchits want Martha to hide her arrival and surprise the family during dinner. They are excited to see her and keep her visit a secret to make the surprise even more special for everyone.
Ah, the Cratchit family from Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"! There's Bob Cratchit, the hardworking father, his wife Mrs. Cratchit, and their children: Martha, Belinda, Peter, Tiny Tim, and the youngest, who is not named in the story. Each member of the family brings their own unique light and love to the story, just like each brushstroke adds depth to a painting.

Well in my opinion, the significance is that she is trying to support her family finacially even though it pays very little; and that shows how poor the Cratchit family is. I would think she has some friends in the hatmaking buisness so it gives her some joy to be there and away from taking care of her sick brother, Tiny Tim. As a side note, I would think Martha is just a regular teenage girl and likes to sneak out a bit, so sometimes her friends and her tell their parents their off to work while really their hanging out together. This is just my opinion and none of it is based off of fact. hope this helps :)
He gets this feeling of love/care when he sees Cratchit and his family at the dinner table and when he sees Tiny Tim. He regrets his actions towards Cratchit and he wants to make him feel better. He experiences to love, joy, caring, and kindness by just looking at their happy family.
I guess she wasn't the oldest or youngest... i just know shes the eight child.
