They and tomatillo, ground cherry, peppers are all Solanaceae, commonly called nightshades. They are fruit bearing plants. Most have inedible or toxic leaves, stems and roots. All parts of the deadly nightshade plant and fruits are poisonous and must not be eaten.

Note: Potatoes are not roots. They are tubers, a sort of underground energy storage structure that if exposed to sunlight develop green flesh that is also toxic.
