I will be graduating this fall with my welding engineering degree. The majority of welding engineers will be making sure that a quality weld is established on a certain product. This is done by working with welders, training, qualifications, code work,..ect

What is the difference between welding engineering and welding technology?

Welding technology is the study and application of the many processes of joining various metals. Welding Engineering is a far deeper study and application into the individual characteristics of each metal. A welding engineer will decide what metals are used in a project and what process to weld those metals. Weld techs will usually just receive blue prints and weld as instructed. Welding technology is usually a 2 year degree, and Welding Engineering is a 4+year degree.

What is the importance of welding in engineering?

There is a tremendous importance of welding in engineering, there are even such things as welding engineers ( I am one). Welding is what holds the majority of structures together--bridges, cars, tractors, cranes, buildings, etc...If any engineer does not have a good understand of this very popular joining process major problems can exist, such as failures from designing a joint that is un-weldable. Most companies these days are trying to hire welding engineers to help with these problems. Welding can get very specialized with more technical metals and applications.

What does a welding engineer do?

A welding engineer is a person with the demonstrated education, experience, and knowledge in specialized fields of welding, brazing, cutting and materials joining. Welding engineering is a broad field that covers fields from automotive and shipbuilding to nuclear power, areospace and mining. If there is joining of metals involved then there is probably a welding engineer involved the in the process. A welding engineer is capable of directing those operations associated with weldments and other types of joints that are completed in accordance with the appropriate contract documents, codes, and other standards to produce a satisfactory product. The welding engineer's activities begins before production or construction welding and continues through the production process then ending when the production process is complete. This may include NDE, materials science, filler metal control, corrosion control and repair welding. Most Welding Engineering curriculum's are built on a solid general engineering, calculus-based, foundation that includes course work in mathematics, physical metallurgy, physics, chemistry, engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluids and other core engineering requirements. See Ohio State University for information on 4 year ABET accredited welding engineering degrees.

Is welding a 2 year degree 4 year degree or certification?

Welding can be all three and even more than that. You can earn a two year Associates degree, a four year Bachelors degree, and even a Masters or Doctorate in Welding Engineering. The American Welding Society also offers many different certifications including a Certified Welding Inspector, a Certified Welding Engineer, and welding certifications for different materials, base metal thicknesses, and welding positions.
