an X on a tab, simply means to gently lay your finger over that string, to make it sound a bit distorted, or a bit muted. the sound only differs from string to string, but makes no difference where it is played (which fret). To perform it do this: Put your finger on the string, but do not add as much pressure as if you were to play that string. This is not very hard, but harder to explain than it is to perform!:)
