What dpes the x mean on guitar tabs?

an X on a tab, simply means to gently lay your finger over that string, to make it sound a bit distorted, or a bit muted. the sound only differs from string to string, but makes no difference where it is played (which fret). To perform it do this: Put your finger on the string, but do not add as much pressure as if you were to play that string. This is not very hard, but harder to explain than it is to perform!:)

It means to mute the specific string(s) it's on. For example, in this meaningless tab:

E|-2-2-x-x-x-x--2-2------------------------

You play the two power chords, and mute all three strings, E, A, and D, and strum once. You play the x's as any other note strum-wise, but don't press all the way down on the string, therefore muting it.

The symbol that goes in frount of a note and looks like an X is a double sharp. It is just making the note go up two half steps instead of just one.
