The straight-sided pint has been around from the early 20th century at least, but the authentic English "Four-ale bar" pint mug, up to the end of the first world war, was actually a China pot in a funny shade of pink with a white handle. The indented beer mug however, arrived in 1948, driving out the standard fluted glasses in England.

Standard brew directions call for 8oz of liquid, after that it depends on the size of the mug.
