Crepuscular rays
The term commonly used for this phenomenon is "sunbeam" or "sun ray." It occurs when sunlight passes through openings in clouds, creating a visible shaft of light.
There are several names. Sun Beam (Sunbeam) and Sun Ray (Sunray), being the most commonly used in the English Language. Others are: - Ray of Sunshine Light Beam Light Stream Sun Stream Sun Ladder and many more. The reason we can see it is that the light is reflected and refracted by many tiny particles in the atmosphere such as smoke or water vapour particles.
We call that "bouncing back" a reflection. Heat in the form of infrared (IR) radiation is like light, and light and sound are said to be reflected off surfaces that do not absorb them.
Two refractions occur as a light ray travels through a lens: one as the ray enters the lens, and one as the ray exits the lens.
The emergent ray is the ray of light which passes through a denser medium(glass) to a rarer medium(air).
Refracted light
A ray of light in the air is a thin beam of light traveling through the atmosphere. The ray can be produced by natural sources like the sun or artificial sources like light bulbs. It can be seen as a visible stream of photons passing through the air.
A straight arrow is typically used to represent a light ray in a ray diagram. The arrow indicates the direction of the light ray as it travels through a medium or reflects off a surface.
When a ray of light passes through a glass slab, it will undergo refraction. The light ray will bend towards the normal as it enters the glass slab, and then bend away from the normal as it exits the slab. The path of the light ray will be slightly shifted from its original direction.
Rays are used to model the propagation of light through an optical system
A sunbeam is an example of a narrow, concentrated stream of sunlight that shines through an opening, such as a window or a gap in the clouds. It is a natural phenomenon caused by light reflecting or refracting off particles in the atmosphere.
