People who build statues are usually sculptors
If they are Christian statues, Christians generally call them icons. If they are non-Christian statues, Christians generally call them idols.
People make statues for various reasons, including honoring or memorializing important figures, promoting cultural heritage, expressing artistic creativity, and commemorating historical events. Statues often serve as symbolic representations that convey meaning and values to viewers.

Marble
Statues are commonly made from marble.
The Romans' created statues that were looked as though they were real. They also depicted every flaw of the person being sculpted to make it more lifelike. People would be able to "read" the statues and remember what the person did or be made aware of some honor or quality of the person. More modern sculptors have taken similar approaches when designing statues. This is done to make the statues as realistic looking as possible.

These huge statues are meant to look grand and imposing. They represent the likenesses of gods and kings, not common, or normal, people.
