It is commonly known as "Ash Wednesday", so named as the Faithful receive ashes on their foreheads. The ashes, which are a sacramental in the Catholic Church, serve as a reminder that we are mortal and death is certain. With this consideration, it is hoped that the Faithful will give a good effort at sanctifying themselves through Lent, not only to be ready for Easter, but that they be ready for death when it comes.

First Sunday of Lent (really) Invocabit is the NAME of the First Sunday of Lent which is taken from the Introit of the Day. Invocabit means "He will hear me..." Meaning God will hear us and our plea for salvation.

The Sundays of Lent in order are: Invocabit, Reminiscere, Oculi, Laetare, Judica and Palmarum. These have been their names for well over a thousand years.

It used to be known as Sexagesima as it is the 60th day before Easter, now it is just a Sunday in Ordinary Time in the new calendar, its number would change depending on the date of Easter. The three weeks before Lent used to be known as pre-Lent or the Septuagesima season beginning with Septuagesima Sunday, the Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima being the Sunday directly before Ash Wednesday. Now they are the last three Sundays in Ordinary Time before Lent.

The first day of Lent is Ash Wednesday because Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and we receive ashes which makes a cross on our foreheads. you will receive them if you go to a Catholic school and you can receive them in Church on that day. It is really important that you don't rub out the ashes.
