The doldrums is an area near the Equator (or near the poles, but the Equatorial doldrums is more well known) where there are times of calm where no winds blow. It is not a wilderness area, though...

The winds in the middle latitudes between 35 and 65 degrees are prevailing winds. They blow from the area's high pressure towards the poles.
Polar easterlies are prevailing winds that blow from east to west between 60 degrees and 90 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. Polar westerlies are prevailing winds that blow from west to east between 30 degrees and 60 degrees latitude in both hemispheres.
