In crochet, you slst by inserting the hook in the desired location, yo, then pull through all the way so there is only the carry loop on the hook. One reason to Slst is moving the yarn forward into position at the next spot without making another stitch. This isn't to be confused with skipping stitches (which makes a hole) or decreasing stitches. If you decrease by performing slst, then you'll have an uneven piece and perhaps gaps. Slst is also a good tool for ending a piece. I hope I have helped you out.

What does sl1 mean on knitting pattern?

slip 1 - insert needle into stitch as normal then just pull it off the left needle onto the right without knitting or purling it

What does sl1 mean in knitting?

In knitting, sl1 means to slip one stitch. To do this simply slip the stitch from the left hand needle to the right without knitting it. Stitches can either be slipped purlwise or knitwise. If slipped purlwise, the stitch will not twist but if slipped knitwise it will twist. Therefore, if the pattern does not specify which way to slip the stitch, it is best to slip purlwise. See the related link for a diagram showing how to slip stitches.
