Well, I also have a harsh teacher. Though there's no real way to deal with it. Find out if the teacher respects you and understands your rights. If she does, then try telling her in a comforting way. Don't take it the wrong way, but you should tell her kindly. Kindly enough so you don't get detention. Remember;only tell her if she respects your rights. My teacher does and I wouldn't be afraid to tell her. Sometimes it's best just to put your head down, keep quiet, get on with your work, and accept that you are likely to only have this teacher for what works out to less than one year. Tell your parents, just so you have some way to work off your frustrations. Because they are making you do things you do not want to do. If none of the things up above don't work, and you really, REALLY hate your teacher, then its time for your last option: transfer!

Ask them to be more polite. If they aren't, tell someone on the senior management or lay a complaint.

Try to get on their good side - push in chairs, pick up trash, etc. All that little good stuff and perhaps they'll develop a soft spot for you.

Having been a substitute teacher for a few years, I have something to add. The substitute teacher would certainly appreciate students who did nice things, but many substitute are mean, or put on the appearance of being mean, in order to maintain order in the classroom so they can teach students what the teacher would be teaching. Many substitute teachers have learned the hard way that appearing like they are not tough will only result in the students and the sub having an absolutely horrible day. Why? It's because some students believe having a sub is a day to goof off and have some fun, which is not the case. Substitute teachers are expected to keep order in the class and to teach. If they don't. they won't be called to sub.

If students do not want the substitute teacher to be what they consider mean, the best thing to do is for the class to show the sub from the start of the day that they are going to behave themselves, show him or her respect and do the lessons that have been planned for the day. By doing so, the sub may not appear to be so mean and the day will actually be enjoyable for all.

And here is a tip: The more students do not do what they are supposed to do, the "meaner" substitute teachers might become, not because they are really mean, but in order to do the job they are being paid to do.

You lay low and keep a low profile. I had a mean teacher but I did well in school and sometimes I made a nice card for her. Always pay attention in class and don't attract the attention. That is your teacher's job.

Or, you can video them at their worst, and upload it to YouTube.

Be nice to her/him give cards or presents on holidays, show him/her that the class is nice etc.

The best way to "make" someone nice is to show them that you respect them and care about them. Treat your teacher the way you'd treat your parents or grandparents, or anyone you respect, and show him or her that you are a kind, trustworthy student.

A lot depends on what you count as "mean". You should ask your parents. If you really feel it merits it, you could go to the school office and talk to the principal or vice principal.
