What do you do when a chickadee mother abandons her chicks?

First try to put the baby wild bird back into the nest or near the nest so the parents can raise it. Many of the baby birds found, if they are fully feathered, are fledglings on their first flight. They just need to be picked up off the ground and put in a bush or on a tree branch. Do not worry about the "scent of man" on the baby - it is an old wives tale. The parents will not reject the baby from a human handling the bird. Be sure to leave the area and don't look out a window to watch - the parents will see you and will be afraid, causing them to stay away from the baby. Also, the parents will hear its baby from a block or two away from where you first found it.

∙ 11y agoBe VERY calm and first, make sure the mother bird is really abandoning her chicks and not just running to the store for a quick errand... just kidding. But they do sometimes leave the nest to come back after a little bit.
Once you are positive these chicks are orphaned, then get some baby bird formula and feed it to them with a dropper. You're going to have to be as busy as any mother bird, so get ready for some sleepless nights. They eat SO often! It's really difficult to handle this on your own. In fact you should seek professional help, because they will bug you every time you walk by. They will eat as much as you will give them. They're like the cookie monster. NO matter how many cookies you give them, they will always want more. In fact they might eat TOO much. So unless you were born with the instincts of a mother chickadee, you're going to need some help here.
