Acute Bronchitis, the type usually caused by a cold or flu which lasts 1-2 weeks, is a viral infection which is not affected by antibiotics. It is contagious and so preventative measures should be taken to stop the spread to others nearby, such as wearing a mask, carrying a hand towel to cough into and in mild cases, simply coughing into your elbow.

Bronchitis is very common and nearly always clears up by itself, except in cases of Chronic Bronchitis. The best way to treat it is to keep the air passages relaxed and clear. Hot drinks (such as tea) especially with peppermint or eucalyptus have been found to work wonders and have been quite helpful for my recent case. For coffee drinkers, this is one illness in which it does help! Herbal/alternative remedies may include eating garlic, stinging nettles or food including these. Be careful to avoid cold or dry air. Using a vaporizer helps and it is good to open the windows on hot, wet days.

In the case of bronchitis lasting more than 4-5 weeks, a specialist should be consulted who will likely perform an x-ray on the chest to assess your situation, as it would imply chronic bronchitis which may require further treatment or medication to resolve.
