A proper charge from an African elephant is generally silent with its trunk tucked away under its forelegs, and its ears flat against its head. If the target is a human it will generally knock its foe over and then tusk, head-but or knee the victim to death. Warning charges, (often incorrectly termed "mock" charges) are normally accompanied by vocalisation, much ear flapping, and trunk waving. The elephant pulls up short of its target, generally creating much dust. It is certainly intimidating behaviour. Peter Winhall ( fgasa registered guide)
Elephants are well known for charging at humans, especially when they enter onto their breeding grounds. The animals are suprisingly fast and persistant. The best way to avoid them is to climb a substantial tree, one big enough that they will not be able to pull down with their trunks (which they have been known to do) and then call for help. One man in India has claimed to have been stuck up a tree for over 20 hours whilst an angry elephant tried to shake him out of the tree that he had climbed up. The best advise is not to approach elephants unless you are in the company of an experienced elephant guide. Robert Runk Bsc Animal welfare centre, Skegness.
