Obviously, he must have a problem for not likening to meet your family because of there approval or rejection if they start asking him question's.
That personally is the most stupid excuse on this planet so far if anyone uses it, because in the long run it's up only to both to solve the problem and nobody else.
Maybe, there is someone he found out is there he does not like, or has had some encounter or relationship with someone there he does not like to face again.
The reasons can be Unlimited, pending on what his motive and behavior show signs about.
Give it time, and don't stop trying!
Eventually at some point he will have to give in.
If not, move on!
