While sleeping, the muscles of the throat relax, and our tongue falls backward, and the throat becomes narrow and flabby. As we breathe, the walls of the throat begin to vibrate - generally when we breathe in, but also, to a lesser extent, when we breathe out. These vibrations lead to the characteristic sound of snoring. The narrower the airway becomes, the greater the vibration and the louder is snoring.
