For taking the Red Cross Class, if you pass (which you usually do) you get a card that babysitter certifies you by the American Red Cross. I also got a handy little first aid kit as well as the training book, CD, and Emergency Reference Guide.

Red Cross use to have a class and the YMCA did too. Call them in your area and see if they still do. You can also take classes at the Fire Department when they offer classes.
Yes a 12 year old child can babysit with babysiting classes, but I advice an adult is still aroun just in case
