Do some internet research before getting a dog! There's a lot to know, and it's not as simple as you may think. I will still answer your question, despite my beliefs that you should do your own research!

You can get dogs from the following places:

  • Shelters, such as a Humane Society (generally cheapest). If the shelter is full and not a no-kill shelter, the dogs who have been there the longest are often euthanized.
  • Rescues, where dogs have needed extensive medical care and recovery and are now ready for adoption (not as cheap because the not-for-profit rescue needs money to pay for future rescue dogs). By supporting these places, you keep injured dogs from getting abandoned or euthanized on the spot.
  • Pet shops, where dogs have usually been "delivered" from puppy mills, where animals are in terrible conditions. By buying from these, you're supporting their animal cruelty. They're often more expensive than both shelters and rescue mills too.
  • Breeders, who are people who raise dogs at home. Usually, these dogs are purebred. They cost a lot but are often bred not to have genetic health problems, and their behavior is more predictable than a mutt's. (e.g. A German shepherd will protect your family, but you don't know what a mix from a pound or rescue will do until you've committed to keeping it).

Also considering being a foster parent, and you can keep pound and rescue dogs for a set number of months and/or until they are adopted. The problem with this is that you don't develop as much of a relationship with your dog, since you know you soon won't have it. Sometimes, you can adopt the dog after being a foster parent.
