Obtain one and keep it.
Depending on the type of animal involved and where you live, keeping it may be illegal or restricted in your area. Your best bet is to contact your local wildlife department and tell them what kind of animal you want; they should at least be able to advise you who you should contact for any necessary permits (or they may just tell you it's against the law for you to have one... in most places, it's illegal to keep a wild animal as a pet, though in some cases you may be allowed to raise one for eventual release into the wild).
A good class pet would be a Guniea pig.
As a pet yes, they could be considered exotic, but as a animal in a zoo it would not be one of the more exotic animals.
While it is surely best for them to live in their natural environment, some exotic animals can be kept well as pets. What is important here is that the exotic pet must not be a danger to the humans around it, and that the owner knows how to care properly for the exotic pet.

an exotic pet is aeuphemismfor a wild animal.wild animals do very poorly in captivity. If you care anything for the animal in question do not force it to be a pet.

Technically an exotic is an animal kept as a pet that is not native to the country you live in. It is also an animal that most would consider a wild animal.
