To breathe through the skin. Animals that do this are usually amphibious. Thier skin has to be moist to make gaseous exchanges easier so they might spend a lot of time in the water or naturally keep producing a mucus. They're also usually animals with underdeveloped lungs, so breathing through the skin was an evolutionary necessity.
