There are four Gospels in The Bible - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They are each telling the personal eyewitness accounts of the life of Christ - his birth, death, and resurrection. They all are writing for the one purpose - to spread the word that Jesus was the Messiah who rose from the dead to reunite man with God.

What are gospels?

The term "gospel" has come to mean any authoritative document that is intended to describe the life of Jesus. Many gospels have been written, but only four are now considered canonical - part of the Old Testament. There is no evidence that there existed any sort of canon in the first century. The four gospels of the Old Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) were probably written between around 70 CE and the early years of the second century, but were never mentioned together until 180 C.E. Irenaeus, assistant to the first Christian bishop of Lyon, was the first to give the explicit formation of four gospels, and exactly four, around 180 CE. He said that just as there are four winds, so there must be four gospels. I don't really know who wrote the gospels. The word 'gospel' is taken from the Greek words meaning ' good news' and that is its biblical meaning. The Gospels are intended to proclaim the good news of Jesus' birth, death, resurrection and its meaning for mankind as a whole and for individuals. A few days ago, one of my friends purchased Gospel Bible Tracts books from, Gospeltracts.org who is sharing the message of Christ with all people worldwide. Thanks, Regards, Sierra

What does the word Greek mean?

It's a Greek word (ευαγγέλιον, pronounced evv-ann-ghell-ee-on). It is made up of eu-(meaning good) and -angelia (meaning news), so basically it means good news. Today it is used exclusively to refer to the four gospels of the New Testament (because to Christians they contain the good news that the Messiah has arrived). The four evangelists, of course, are quite literally the bearers of good news.

How do you know that the first four books in the New Testament are canonical?

The word 'canonical' does not mean 'authentic' or genuine'. It simply means that they are considered authoritive, standard or accepted. There are numerous other gospels that could be equally authentic or inauthentic, but which are not accepted as standard New Testament gospels.

Who wrote the other gospels?

That depends. What do you mean by "other?" The four gospels were written by the Apostle Matthew, John Mark, who received much of his account from the Apostle Peter, Luke, who served as a doctor and followed Jesus, and John the Revelator, who replaced every mention of his name with "The disciple whom Jesus loved." There are a few other gospels, for example in the Catholic Bible, there's a gospel that Thomas (the Doubter) wrote.

Why are the first four books of the New Testament called Gospels?

Answer 1In his epistles, Paul spoke of the gospel that he taught, meaning the "good news" about Jesus. Later, when Mark wrote more good news about Jesus, it was natural to call this a gospel as well. Eventually, the word 'gospel' came to mean a genre of scriptural writing, and came to include Matthew, Luke, Johnand many other gospels that were not included in the New Testament.Answer 2The Gospels, the first four books of the New Testament. the term Gospel stems directly from the Anglo-Saxon godspel, meaning god-message. However the earlier form god-spel meant "good message". Today many call the Gospel "Good news".And it is certainly "good news" because the gospels tell us what God is like and it tells us that we should be "born again" or regenerated from our old sinful life. The Gospels also tell us how we are to live and love our neighbor as ourselves. The very best "good news" tells us that Jesus Christ came to die on the cross to pay for our sins and that by accepting Him we will have eternal life. Lastly the Gospels tell us of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is ultra important. If Jesus had not resurrected from the dead we would have no Savior, there would be no Christian faith, we would be without hope in this world and certainly would not have an after life. To the Christian these things are very 'good news".

How are gospels connected to the life of Jesus of Nazareth?

Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth. The angel came to Mary in Nazareth. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem and went to Egypt for a short stay, the family returned to Nazareth. Joseph was a carpenter in Nazareth and taught Jesus to be a carpenter which trade he plied in Nazareth. During Jesus' ministry He went to Nazareth and preached in the Synagogue, but the people knowing Jesus most of His life could not believe He was the chosen Messiah.
