The noble metals are a group of metals that resist oxidation and corrosion in moist air. They are the opposite of the base metals, which more readily oxidize and corrode.

Some of the noble metals are gold, platinum, and iridium. Aside from being corrosion resistant, they are also very expensive.

What does the term noble mean when referring to noble metals and noble gasses?

They generally do not react with other elements. In other words, they're "too good" to associate with anything else. When discussing metals, it also means that they don't corrode (i.e. they don't oxidize). Noble metals such as gold and platinum are considered more valuable than metals such as silver, which slowly tarnishes.
