Is secularization essential for a nation-state to become modern?
Yes, but that depends on one's definition and understanding of secularisation. If secularisation is taken to mean the removal of the influence of organised religion or religious institutions in the operation of the state then it is essential to the effectiveness of a modern state that is able to accomodate difference and diversity. The inclusion of spiritually inclusive ideas, concepts and values in the public sphere, however, does not undermine secularism. A secular constitution, for example, may make reference to the idea of God but as long as it does not define or limit the idea, there is no incongruence. Secularism is not synonymous with atheism. It is worth remembering that the historical roots of secularism lie in the religious conflicts of post-Reformation Europe and that secularism was the best framework within which Catholicism and Protestantism could co-exist and agree to disagree without the constant risk of a war or social conflict overhanging everything all the time.
