Warming up means engaging in light practice prior to an actual event. It's actually considered good practice to build up to vigorous exercise with at least some graduation. Much like a car performs better once its engine has warmed up a bit, the practice "warms up" your body and make it less likely to be overstressed and possibly suffer damage during the actual performance. Warming up also has mental benefits as the practice helps refresh memory and build concentration, thus why you also see musicians the like warm up before a performance.
