You would need as large an aquarium as possible and the following gear to suit the size of tank and stand. A Protein skimmer, a Power filter, an Ozonizer, live rock, live sand/gravel a Hydrometer, Thermometer, Lights. (Maybe a refridgeration unit). A complete water testing kit. A good book of instructions and if possible an exerienced cold water marine aquarist to help you.

Salt water fish tanks are a lot more work than a freshwater tank. (SERIOUSLY more work and more money) They also need frequent partial water changes. Salt water fish are also much more difficult to take care of. But for the sake of answering your question, you should buy AQUARIUM salt and follow the directions on it. Do NOT use any other salt as they contain other chemicals that can and will kill your fish.

It varies depending who you talk to. The bare minimum would be, tank, lights, heater, salt mixing chemicals, filter.

A proper reef tank setup would need, high water flow (pumps/impellers), proper lighting, a protein skimmer, some basic debris filter media, chemicals for mixing salt, a way to get pure water to mix with, substrate, live rocks, and the organisms you plan on keeping.

First you need to decide the type of tropical fish you want, and find out the aquarium size best suited for the fish.

You will also need filtration, food, aerators, decorations of some sort, and of course a heater.
