You will need a tv antenna and a coaxial lead in wire with connectors.
Outdoor antennas don't stand up well. I would replace an antenna after 5 to 7 years even if it looks ok. a new antenna with new lead in coax cable would improve the signal to the TV set.
You don't have to purchase a new HD TV antenna. You can purchase any type of antenna and it will work on a HDTV as well as any other television. The television is not the issue.
All TVs including new ATSC Digital ones use the same frequencies as older NTSC Analog sets. An amplified antenna is recommended because there is a threshold where a weak analog signal will be visible (with considerable static) but a digital tuner will not have sufficient strength to display a digital (no noise or static) picture. Outdoor roof Antennas work great as well, you don't need an HDTV antenna, discount stores should have one for around $30.
The motor that raises and lowers the antenna is controlled by a wire which is connected to the power switch in the stock radio. The wire from the antenna itself has nothing to do with raising and lowering the antenna. Touch the wires that were connected to the stock radio to a hot wire and see if the antenna starts to move. If if does, hook that wire to the wire from the new radio which is supposed to control the antenna motor. If there is no such wire, connect the antenna motor wire to the Accessory circut. The antenna will go up whenever the key is turned on. Or, you can get fancy and install a switch for it.
I will need a new outdoor thermometer for the garden.

Amplified antennas or antennas with amplifiers are usually the best choices for DTVs. The digital antennas RCA ANT751 and RCA ANT800 receive good reviews . The Channel Master digital antenna CM-3020 is also highly rated as good antenna.
You would need to get a tool to remove the notched chrome piece that holds the antenna mast, or carefully use pliers to unscrew it out. After you remove that, the antenna itself is held by a 10mm bolt. to get to it you'll need to open up the trunk lining near the antenna location and remove that bolt. Then, pull the antenna far enough to disconnect the antenna wire and power. Assuming the antenna motor is still functional, you can then replace the antenna mast with a new one. Or, you can install an aftermarket rubber antenna.
You don't need a new TV or antenna. You need a Digital Converter Box. Go to a Radio Shack, Circuit City or Best Buy. Connect your old antenna to the converter box, connect the converter box to your old TV...all will be well.
A tv antenna and a digital tv and/or a converter box.
To replace a broken radio antenna on a 2004 GMC Envoy you need to unscrew the old antenna. Next, place the new antenna in the hole and screw into place.
In the US the answer is probably not. Digital and analog TV broadcasts use the same frequencies and antennas. Digital TV is more fussy about signal quality than the older analog signals. So if you get marginal analog reception, figure on getting a new antenna for digital. The idea that there are special HDTV antennas is just marketing hype. Any antenna that gives you better digtial reception will also give you better digital reception.
