You need the willingness to learn bookkeeping. I started as an assistant to an accountant. I was surprised when I wanted to learn more and more about the principles of accounting, since I am not that good in math. I read some bookkeeping books and joined a few organizations. My favorite is the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers www.aipb.org. They have certification courses that I have been obtaining at my own pace. Also, you might want to specialize in QuickBooks. They have free learning tutorials online. I find that many companies are looking for bookkeeper with QB experience.
