I would say maturity, and a reasonable amount of knowledge on the category you're thinking of supervising. I was asked if I would like to supervise the snakes category - since, when I started here, I tended to stick to that subject.
A supervisor should be someone who is interested in helping others, someone who has the time to review his or her area fairly regularly, someone who has the time to research answers, and someone who can at least attempt to offer an unbiased viewpoint. A supervisor also needs to be responsible in his/her duties. Supervisor should have the ability to communicate well with others, particularly those with opposing viewpoints. A Supervisor also needs to maintain a somewhat professional tone when answering questions or when speaking directly to other contributors. Proper spelling and grammar skills are also important and do have a positive impact on content.
Communication is an important part of supervisor skills. Dealing with different people often involves relaying information to them. Everyone will not have the same comprehension level. A supervisor may have to help people will little or no education understand subjects that may seem very complex to them. On the other hand, that person may also have to make upper management understand staff issues that they cannot relate to. Writing skills are also important for many supervisors. Some are required to compose and submit a variety of reports. They may also have to write materials such as memos, notices, and articles for company newsletters that can engage and be understood by the entire staff.

Someone who can put trust into his or her employees. Someone who does not watch over his workers and instead believe that they are doing what they were asked to do. Someone who trains his workers properly. Finally someone who can relate with the workers and understand them if a mistake is made, etc.
As a Supervisor, you should...
-try to be fair; just because your high on the rankings doesnt give you the right to be cruel
-make the best decisions; dont make a decision to feed your personal gain, think of everyone else.
-be responsible; dont put off your duties, because theyre important
-be reasonable; dont be leanient with one individual and completely cruel with another, or expect too little or too much of someone or something
-be honest; set good examples
-be stern; dont let the old puppy eye trick work unless they really deserve another shot. dont give in to everyone so easily
-do the best job you can; youll be surprised what you can do
A good supervisor is kind, patient and makes sure the goals are being reached and policies are being followed. They also need to like to work in a high pressure, fast paced environment.

Never kiss up to your supervisor, your colleagues will hate you for this. Nobody likes people that do this. You should just do as you are asked and approach the supervisor when you have any problems. I used to be a supervisor and hated these types.
