About living in the woods, he wanted to simplify his life to focus on what he saw as really living. He said:
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
He felt that his time there was an experiment and he didn't stay in any one place very long. He said that he had many lives to lead and he had spent enough time on that one.
