In those times the people were ruled by monarchs with an extreme amount of power over them. Kings and Lords strongly believed in deities (such as the Christian God). They wanted to show their 'divine power' (given to them by 'God') by building extraordinary structures such as cathedrals and castles.
It was required for the monarch to prove himself. He did this by building grand structures like cathedrals and castles. If a King built an amazing cathedral, he was very 'divine'. The place of worship had to be 'grand'.
Castles were also built for protection against enemies, and comfort for the King.
