A communicative classroom in one in which students create language to share new, relevant information. In contrast, a non-communicative classroom is one in which students rehearse or repeat information that is not necessarily meaningful or expressive for the classroom environment.

For example, you could ask students to recite vocabulary words for the rooms in a house, or you could create a game in which students have to ask and answer questions to find out which room in the house was the crime scene (like the game CLUE). This way the students are using the language to exchange information they are interested in communicating.

Communication by definition requires the sharing of unique information. It must go beyond stating information that is already known.
