Declaration of Independence
Many things led up to the Revolutionary War in America, but the last straw was the "Intolerable Acts" and British pressure in Massachusetts.
The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, is one of the most well-known documents of the American Revolution, but it was not the first. The first significant document was the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, adopted by the Stamp Act Congress in 1765, which protested British taxation and policies. This early document laid the groundwork for the growing demand for independence and set the stage for subsequent revolutionary writings.
The Royal Proclamation of 1763, which aimed to organize British territories in North America and establish relations with Native American tribes, effectively ended with the American Revolutionary War. As the colonies sought independence from British rule, they increasingly ignored the boundaries set by the Proclamation. The subsequent Treaty of Paris in 1783, which recognized American independence and expanded U.S. territory, further nullified the Proclamation's provisions. Consequently, the British government's authority and the frameworks established by the Proclamation were rendered obsolete.
The ancient document that recorded a set of laws for a society is the Code of Hammurabi.
The stamp act of 1775 was the first set of taxes the British colonies were forced to pay. The colonies governed themselves, but had no representation in England. Many thought the King was overstepping his boundaries. This eventually led to the Revolutionary war.
The Articles of Confederation was hastily drawn, and gave the country a skeletal government framework that lacked the authority to levy and raise taxes. The Revolutionary War produced a considerable War debt that needed to be paid, and clearer definitions of state and federal powers needed to be set in place. The Constitutional Convention was called to alter the Articles to provide for these additions. However, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison persuaded the attendees to draft and new document.
