Two of America's Charter Documents explained and listed those Natural Rights the Founders thought were most important to the idea of a free, self-governing nation.
In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote that we Americans were taking this step "to assume... the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle [us]." That is, 'God gave us certain Natural Rights via the Laws of Nature, and we are asserting them now.'
The Bill of Rights is a more detailed list of specific Natural Rights, and the Constitution - although it doesn't mention these Rights explicitly - is designed in every clause to limit the federal government's ability to usurp them.

These are the first 8 Amendments of the United States Constitution. These particular rights are called "enumerated" because they are expressly written into the document. Some, but not all of these rights have been incorporated by the 14th Amendment.
