The award did not go to a country, but the 2011 Oscar for Best Documentary Short went to "Saving Face," about a plastic surgeon who aids Pakistani women who have been attacked with acid. The film was directed by Sharmeen Obaid, who became Pakistan's first-ever Academy Award winner, and American Daniel Junge.
Contrary to popular belief, Nobel Prize winner Al Gore did not win an Oscar. He did go on stage when An Inconvenient Truthwon the Oscar for Best Documentary. But the award went to the film's producer and director, Davis Guggenheim.
First Steps won the Oscar for Documentary - Short Subject - in 1947.
