The word 'place royale' means Royal Square. It refers to the building of pricey buildings as residences for royal and aristocratic families around a central, landscaped square. The original model for all future squares of various places and times is the now-called Place des Vosges in the third and fourth arrondissements of Paris. The Place, under the previous name of Place Royale, dates back to the early 17th century.
