The carat sytem of diamonds is actually pretty simple. Just think of the carat system like you'd think of the monetary system. Tge carat system is broken into "points." Each "point" is like one penny. 1.00ct (1 carat) is comparable to a dollar ($1). .50ct (1/2 carat) would be comparable to 50 cents. It would follow then, that .25ct would be like 25 cents. In your case, a .012 would refer to 12 points, or 12 cents to the dollar. Theres a great tutorial on precious metals and diamonds that you can read if you want more information. If the characters '.012' are stamped in the metal, the stamp may have no relationship to the stone mounted in the ring. Take your ring to your local jeweler, who can look at it and help you decipher the stamp and give you an informal assessment of the stone.
