*228, not just 228.
Dialing *228 enables you to update your Preferred Roaming List (PRL) or program your phone with new updates. (iPhone users get phone updates via i Tunes)
By performing the PRL update your phone will stay on the Verizon Wireless network and/or digital service whenever possible. You should perform this update every 3 months, or whenever you change plans. (I prefer to check mine about once every 5 or 6 weeks.)
I like to update the PRL when my phone has a weak signal, when I travel, or when it tries to roam. They are constantly upgrading and expanding their network, so capturing the latest Roaming List can't hurt.
*228
221 is not a valid command on a Verizon phone. By dialing *228 and selecting option 1, you can connect with Verizon to program a newly purchased phone. This option is commonly used when purchasing a phone online.
*228 will allow you to upgrade your software, roaming capabilities, and switch phones.

go in to tools/phone settings/security/reset phone. Security code is six zeros and the pascode to reset is the last 4 of your programmed phone number. Everything will be erased and you will have to reprogram by doing a *228

No. The only Verizon Wireless phones that use SIM cards are Global Phones. SIM cards are only used for the GSM technology. Verizon Wireless runs off of the CDMA technology. So... if you switch the SIM card, the phone still won't work because it has nothing to do with the CDMA and that's what Verizon Wireless works off of. HOWEVER, you can activate a Verizon Wireless phone on an existing account by dialing *228 pressing SEND then choosing option 3.
