The Second Book of Timothy is one of the pseudo-Pauline epistles known as the 'Pastorals' because they deal with pastoral issues that were important during the second century. This verse instructs the Church leaders to use the scriptures not only as as source of doctrine, but also to reprimand wayward Christians and to guide them in the right path.
(2 Timothy 4:7-8) ". . .I have fought the fine fight, I have run the course to the finish, I have observed the faith. From this time on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me as a reward in that day, yet not only to me, but also to all those who have loved his manifestation."
The Apostle Paul was writing about the future for faithful obedient annointed Christians.
Second Timothy is an encyclical written in Paul's name during the first half of the second century, to address pastoral issues that had arisen and for that reason is known as a 'Pastoral epistle'. Chapter 4 is the concluding chapter, in which 'Paul' signs off and sends his greetings to the companions of Timothy, but first he tells Timothy news of others and mentions that he himself expects to die soon.
As with all pseudepigraphical documents, we should not assume that the intended recipient really was Timothy. The personal touches in this chapter were clearly intended to convince readers that this epistle was really written by Paul, and not a forgery.
II Timothy 2:22
