According to The Bible, this is a matter for "the wise."
"Here is Wisdom. Let him that hath Understanding count the number of the Beast..." (Rev.13:18 KJV)
(Living Bible): "Here is a puzzle that calls for careful thought to solve it...".
(New Living Translation): "Wisdom is needed to Understand this. Let the one who has Understanding solve the number of the Beast...".
(New International Version): "This calls for Wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the Beast...".
You'll get thousands of hits on the internet for a "prophetic 666" search. Yet, no one has resolved this "mystery" to the satisfaction of all.
Is no one wise?
The Bible does speak of "two kinds of Wisdom," however. God's Wisdom... and the wisdom of the world.
"For God says, 'I will destroy all human plans of salvation no matter how wise they seem to be, and ignore the best ideas of men, even the most brilliant of them.' So what about these wise men, these scholars, these brilliant debaters of this world's great affairs? God has made them look foolish, and shown THEIR WISDOM to be useless nonsense.
"For God IN HIS WISDOM saw to it that the world would never find God through human brilliance, and then He stepped in and saved all those who BELIEVED HIS MESSAGE, which the world calls foolish and silly." (I Cor.1:19-21 LVB Living Bible)
It would seem that, in the matter of the prophetic"666"... both Godly Wisdom as well as the wisdom of the worldhas managed to elude men.
It looks like the world will just have to wait for the Beast to be revealed on the world scene in his own good timebefore men will be able to "calculate" his number, accurately.
But, then... when that happens, why bother?
In conclusion, Matthew Henry's take on "666" is:
"...The number of the beast is given, so as to show the infinite Wisdom of God, and to exercise the wisdom of men. The number is of a man, computed after the usual manner among men, and it is 666. What or who is intended by this, remains a mystery. To almost every religious dispute this number has yet been applied, and it may reasonably be doubted whether the meaning has yet been discovered. But he who has Wisdom and Understanding, will see that all the enemies of God are numbered and marked out for destruction; that the term of their power will soon expire, and that all nations shall submit to our King of Righteousness and Peace." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary: Revelation 13:16-18)
