It relates to opposition to the established church (that is the Anglican state church in the UK) In the 19th Century

There were those who opposed its status of 'established' and wanted it to be disestablished. There were also those who opposed this group and they received the label "antidisestablishmentarian" - I suspect they are only remembered because when one talks about their position by adding 'ism' to it the resultant word achieved the status of being the longest word in the English language.
