BCC means "Blind carbon copy". Prior to computers, people typed letters on typewriters and used carbon paper between two sheets of paper to make 1 original and one copy. At the bottom of the letter, the typist would add the letters CC: (with names of persons who also got the copy). CC in text and email means the same thing: more than 1 person is receiving the text or email. But with computers, we could also "hide" a receiver's identity, making the copy "blind" to others who receive it. That is why BCC is used.

Examples of reasons to use BCC:

  1. You manage a Mailing List with 800 subscribers. If you did not use BCC, then all those addresses would appear first and take up a page or more of the email.
  2. You manage a Mailing List with many subscribers and to protect their privacy, you use BCC.
  3. You are on a mailing list of all your friends (or family members)-- just to send a joke or picture, you do not need for everyone to have to read each others' names and email addresses.
  4. You want a Supervisor or other department to know what you said, but without the receiver knowing. This is often good if you need to protect yourself.
  5. You have 2 friends who do not know each other, have nothing in common (except you), and won't know each other. You can send the email to yourself, and put their addresses under BCC.

It stands for blind carbon copy. Cc stands for carbon copy. The term carbon copy comes from the time where secretaries used carbon paper to duplicate a letter with a type writer. The term stuck arround when we started using email. Basicly a cc is whem you ad a receipient beside the main recepient. Bcc is the same but then the person you sre sending the message cannot see tou copied the message to somebody else
