First things first: there is archaeological evidence that at least some of the people and events in the poem are real... for example, the barrow identified by tradition as Eadgil's contained artifacts supporting his description in the Beowulf saga.
That said, there's so far no actual proof that Beowulf himself was more than simply a fictional character, and even if he did exist, it's pretty clear that at least some of his exploits are... at least exaggerated.
In the story, he is buried in a tumulus (burial mound) "by the sea" in Geatland, which is today part of Sweden. Birger Nerman, a Swedish archaeologist, has identified a barrow in the village of Skalunda as being likely the one referred to in the poem, though this barrow has not been excavated yet.
Beowulf tells Wiglaf that he wants his burial mound to be called "Beowulf's Barrow."

Beowulf's final boast is that he will fight the dragon once it comes out into the open. He fights the dragon and kills it, with the help of Wiglaf. However, Beowulf is mortally wounded in the battle and dies.
A burial mound is a mound of earth and stones raised over a grave or graves.
The Geats honor Beowulf by cremating his body on a funeral pyre and building a grand barrow as a monument to his bravery and leadership. They also mourn his death with lamentations and recite poems celebrating his heroic deeds.
After Beowulf died, he was cremated and his body was placed in a barrow (burial mound). His funeral pyre was surrounded by treasures and weapons, and he was mourned by his people. Beowulf's story and heroic deeds continued to be celebrated in the form of epic poetry.
