First he is more of strict guy and always wanting to follow the rules and wasn't really thinking about the men. Then he realizes the men have risked their lives to be part of the union. The rebels will kill them if they capture them. In the end he leads the men because he is going to risk his life for them now. There were a lot of casualties in the first battle so I think he really wanted to risk his life for them. And when he gave the letters to the guy to send to his parents (Attack on Fort Wagner), I think Shaw really knew that he was going to die for the men that day because usually the colonels are supposed to stay away from danger in the back and so he had the guy deliver the messages to his family to say goodbye. You have to be really unselfish to just give away your life like that. That truly is the ultimate sacrifice. And he did die. That was a great movie. (Especially loved: Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Jihmi Kennedy, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Andre Braugher)

Denzel tells Shaw that he isn't really fighting for him. Denzel doesnt think anyone is going to win. So Shaw assures him that someone will win so if he doesnt fight then the wrong people will win and nothing will get better.

You may be talking about "The Taking Of Pelham 123". It was first made in the '60s, starring Walter Mathau and Robert Shaw. It was remade recently starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Mathau/Washington play the Transit chief. Shaw/Travolta take the part of the criminal.

Did Colonel Shaw really get into a quarrel with the quartermaster over supplies and specifically shoes for the 54th?

The event you describe is from the movie "Glory" that tells the story of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. This movie is based upon facts but many of the conversations were probably written by the film writers. This event probably did take place as there have been documents that show there was resistance to providing uniforms and guns to the black soldiers. There are a couple of books about Colonel Shaw that may give more detail on his life. But I don't think Colonel Shaw recorded this conversation.

What rank was Robert gould shaw when in charge of the 54th?
