First he is more of strict guy and always wanting to follow the rules and wasn't really thinking about the men. Then he realizes the men have risked their lives to be part of the union. The rebels will kill them if they capture them. In the end he leads the men because he is going to risk his life for them now. There were a lot of casualties in the first battle so I think he really wanted to risk his life for them. And when he gave the letters to the guy to send to his parents (Attack on Fort Wagner), I think Shaw really knew that he was going to die for the men that day because usually the colonels are supposed to stay away from danger in the back and so he had the guy deliver the messages to his family to say goodbye. You have to be really unselfish to just give away your life like that. That truly is the ultimate sacrifice. And he did die. That was a great movie. (Especially loved: Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Jihmi Kennedy, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Andre Braugher)
Robert Gould Shaw(who was Caucasion) was the Colonel of the 54th Massachussetts Infantry. He died in battle during a Union attack against Fort Wagner on the North Carolina coast. He had been criticized before his death for leading the all-negro regiment. The North also had racial prejudice in its' midst. There was a movie after him. Its called Glory and was filmed in 1989. Robert Shaw was played by Matthew Broderick.
The cast of Glory Girl - 1998 includes: Susan Damante as Mother Welborn Ferrene as Andrew Natalie Shaw as Cynthia
Brinsley Shaw's birth name is Sheldon Brinsley Shaw.
Aleesa Christene Shaw's birth name is Aleesa Shaw.
Sandie Shaw was born on February 26, 1947.
If your talking about glory in the end. I think he landed on his friend Thomas and then Denzel Washington was on top of him but idk.
Matthew Broderick.
He was a grave digger.
He was a white Union officer who led the first African-American volunteer regiment in the Civil War. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (1837-1863) was just 25 years old when he was killed leading a regiment of black soldiers, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, into battle during the American Civil War. The 1989 Civil War film "Glory" was a dramatization of Shaw's leadership of the regiment. Matthew Broderick portrayed Shaw, and the film also featured actors Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.
Robert Shaw was 23 at the beginnig of the movie "Glory".
Colonel robert shaw was 5'6. He was quite under the average adult height in united states.
Shaw was ranked a colonel. This was written in a letter to his mother.

Try your local library. Here are a few books to look for. One Gallant Rush: Robert Gould Shaw and His Brave Black Regiment, by Burchard, Peter. (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1965): 77-78 Sketch of the life and death of Col. Robert Gould Shaw by Robert T Teamoh. Blue-Eyed Child of Fortune: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw by Robert Gould Shaw and Russell Duncan Where Death and Glory Meet: Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry.
You may be talking about "The Taking Of Pelham 123". It was first made in the '60s, starring Walter Mathau and Robert Shaw. It was remade recently starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Mathau/Washington play the Transit chief. Shaw/Travolta take the part of the criminal.
The event you describe is from the movie "Glory" that tells the story of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. This movie is based upon facts but many of the conversations were probably written by the film writers. This event probably did take place as there have been documents that show there was resistance to providing uniforms and guns to the black soldiers. There are a couple of books about Colonel Shaw that may give more detail on his life. But I don't think Colonel Shaw recorded this conversation.
He was a Colonel.
