OpinionBible verses should never be read in isolation. People can give isolated verses a wide range of meanings, but often the meaning of a quotation only becomes clear when read in the context of the surrounding verses.

Leading up to verse 12:1, the author of Ecclesiastes is talking about youth. Addressing a young man (in general), he offers some homely advice. Verse 12:1 concludes this, reminding the youth to remember his God while he is still young, and before the days of old age when death approaches and there is no pleasure in life.

OpinionFollowing God's ways early in life will prevent the added burden of regretful remembrances of youthful sins when in old age.
