GDDR3 is a type of memory. the 3 refers to the speed at which data can be accessed on it. I'm not sure but I believe it refers to the number of data lanes available. obviously, the higher the number, the faster it is. Right now, the most common type is GDDR2 whereas older computers used GDDR or just DDR. Currently, it goes up to GDDR5 which is only used in some graphics cards.

Heres why: For system memory, RAM that you can buy and replace on your motherboard, there isn't any performance difference. ddr3 is NOT faster at all significantly. Its a different type, you simply need to get the same type for compatibility. On laptops, ddr3 gives better battery life but not very significantly. For graphics cards, this is called vRAM and the types are usually called gddr2 and gddr3. In this case, gddr3 is MUCH faster.
