What does Imagine by John Lennon mean?

It's a call by Lennon for people to set aside their differences and live together as a peaceful world community and love each other.

He is asking people to imagine a world that has none of the things in it that are often the cause of conflict- religion, national boundaries, possessions etc. etc., and is asking , just SUPPOSING that none of these things existed, what would we do? We would have no reason to remain suspicious and distrustful of each other, to wage war, to be selfish or mean, to have prejudices etc., so therefore we could all band together as one huge human family and 'the world could be as one', as he sings.

When he sings 'Imagine there's no Heaven,

It's easy if you try'

he's not saying that there ISN'T a Heaven in reality, he's just asking people to PRETEND that there isn't, just for a moment, and saying how like Heaven things could be on Earth if we could all learn to love one another and not worry about material things, religious differences, and so on.
