India was once a territory controlled by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Often referred to as the "UK", "Great Britain" or the "British Empire")

India is now a sovereign nation ruled by it's own people, thus it is "independent of British rule".

In the past Great Britain once controlled many of the largest portions of the world. In the last few centuries more than two dozen territories have broken away from British rule to become independent nations of their own including: Australia, India, South Africa and the USA just to name a few.

Other territories that have been given up by the UK do not always become independent, for example Britain gave up it's claim to Hong Kong, but it became a territory belonging to China rather than an independent nation.
