Many Israelis are wary of Egypt. They believe that the Egyptian people are strongly Anti-Israeli and would, at the very least, seek to end the peace treaty that President Anwar Sadat gave his life to make. From an Israeli perspective, a worsening of the Egyptian-Israeli relationship would be a great loss to both Egyptians and Israelis. However, Israel trusts the Egyptian military which currently runs the country to have interests that coincide well with Israeli interests in the region. While most Israelis would prefer a democratic Egypt that would be friendly to Israel, they argue that the only pragmatic situation to maintain good political relations with Egypt is to support the military government.
