Stem engine was used in all kinds of industry: rextile, iron-making, mining; in transport: Fulton's steam ship, Stephenson's steam locomotive, and later in agricultire as well.

James Watt (1736-1819) is credited with the 1765 improvement of the steam engines of Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729), which dated from 1712. The efficiency of the Watt engine led to its wide industrial use after Watt partnered with Matthew Boulton in 1775.

The steam engine freed factories from the water wheel, and James Watts double - acting rotative version was also used for pumping water out of mines, and powered locomotives. Factories could then be built almost anywhere, and could be closer to needed resources. Many moved closer to ports, to reduce haulage costs.
Nope, James Watt inproved the steam engine by comming up with a seperate condenser to avoid the massive waste of energy making it way more efficient, more cost- effective and more powerful. His engine was used in some of the first steam trains though.
